You may not notice them.  In fact, if they do their job well they will go completely undetected.  They are background actors, more commonly known as "Extras."  These actors seamlessly become extensions of the environment.  They exist on the edge of the spotlight, in the space between the stars and the silver screen.  

Philip Brou contacted Central Casting, one of the oldest and most respected casting agencies in the film industry, and hired 5-veteran extras as subjects for a series of paintings.  This exhibition includes two paintings from this series.  Brou views these paintings as portraits of invisibility. 

For the past 7-years Philip Brou has been developing a series of interconnected projects based on research into seemingly disparate, often inane, facts from his own life. His projects have included investigations into his birth hospital, The Bermuda Triangle, the Grumman Avenger torpedo bomber, Steven Spielberg's childhood home, his high school senior class, and Space Probe Voyager 1's intergalactic mission; to name but a few. His interdisciplinary practice includes painting, sculpture, drawing, installation, and video.

Philip Brou received his BFA in Painting and Printmaking from Virginia Commonwealth University and an MFA in Painting and Drawing from The Ohio State University. He currently resides in Portland, Maine, where he is an Assistant Professor in the Painting Department at Maine College of Art.

These are drawings and objects that are made from a decadent desire to make a simple thing that is both thought and felt in the making alone. Also, these drawings and objects rest only in the thing they are made to be, drawings and objects. That is why they are fitting and reckless.

Kelly Kaczynski is an artist residing in Chicago. She has had solo exhibitions with
Gahlberg Gallery, IL; threewalls, IL; Hyde Park Art Center, IL; Rowland Contemporary, IL;
University at Buffalo Art Gallery, NY; Triple Candie, NY. Group exhibitions include Islip
Art Museum, NY; Josee Bienvenu Gallery, NY; DeCordova Museum, MA; Boston Center
for the Arts, MA. Public installations include projects with the Main Line Art Center,
Haverford, PA; the Interfaith Center, NY; Institute for Contemporary Art, Boston and
the Boston National Historic Parks, MA; Boston Public Library, MA. Curatorial projects
include the exhibition titled ‘Mouthing (a sentient limb)’ at the Hyde Park Art Center,
2011, Chicago, IL, and an ongoing project-based entity titled Unnamed Future Space.
She received an MFA from Bard College in 2003 and BA from The Evergreen State
College in 1995. Kaczynski is Assistant Professor in the Department of Art Theory &
Practice at Northwestern University, IL.

Joshua Abelow was born in 1976 in Frederick, Maryland. He earned his BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1998 and his MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2008. He has had solo shows in New York at James Fuentes and in Toronto at Tomorrow Gallery. Abelow has an upcoming solo exhibition at Sorry We're Closed in Brussels, Belgium. His work has been included in numerous group shows including "Tailgates & Substitutes" at Thierry Goldberg, New York City, "Go Figure" at Dodge Gallery, New York City, "Behind the Curtain, A Lock of Hair Falling" at Gallery Diet in Miami, and "Color Me Bad" at Nudashank, Baltimore. During the summer of 2011 Abelow oversaw a series of curatorial projects at "ART BLOG ART BLOG" a gallery space he conceived in the Chelsea studio of his friend and former employer Ross Bleckner. In the fall of 2011, he published a memoir "Painter's Journal" about his adventures as a burgeoning young artist in New York City in the late 1990s. The book will be widely released in concurrence with Abelow's solo booth with James Fuentes at the first ever Frieze New York, in May of 2012. Office Hours is a gallery project in the university office of artist and professor Pamela Fraser,
at the University of Vermont in Burlington, VT. The gallery will feature revolving solo exhibitions by contemporary artists, which will be open during her posted office hours each term.
